Thursday, February 21st - Quaker Gap Baptist Church will begin a Grief Support Class, “Hope and Healing”, on Thursday evenings Feb. 21st – March 27th - 6:30 – 7:30 pm. Saturday, February 23—King Public Library will offer a free FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) Workshop hosted by the Educational Opportunity Center. Appointments are currently being taken from 9am until 1pm. Walk-ins are also welcome. Participants must bring 2007 W-2 forms and Tax Returns, if applicable. All participants between the ages of 18-23 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Small change for printing will be helpful. Saturday, March 1 - The youth group of Quaker Gap Baptist Church will sponsor a fundraising breakfast at the King American Legion on Saturday, March 1st. Proceeds will be used to help with the cost of their upcoming summer mission trips to El Salvador and Philadelphia. Ticket cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children age 12 and under. Breakfast is 7am- 11am. Tickets can be purchased at the following King businesses: Foothills Juice and Java, Main Street Tire and Automotive, King Liberty, and from L.C. Allen at Farm Bureau.

Saturday, March 1 - The Stokes County Mental Health Association would like to ask Chamber members to help spread the word about the 3rd Annual Bass Fishing Tournament which will be held at Carolina Marina at Belews Lake on Saturday, March 1 – 7:00 am until 3:00 pm. Entry fee is $110.00 per boat with limit of two fishermen per boat. Donuts and coffee will be available before the tournament with hot dogs, desserts and drinks served afterwards. Friday, March 8 - The King Public Library will be having a book sale on Friday, March 8th through Sunday, March 10th in the Shelton Room. All funds will go toward helping the library. The book sale will take place Friday (9:00 am - 6:00 pm), Saturday (10:00 am – 1:00 pm) and Sunday (2:00 pm – 4:00 pm). Please come support the library and grab some great bargains.

Habitat for Humanity of Stokes County is in the process of constructing a house for a deserving family at 1091 Middlefork Road in Walnut Cove. The house is now “in the dry” and volunteers are needed (especially finish carpenters) to assist in completing the house. Volunteer activity is planned on most weekends until the house is completed. State Employee’s Credit Union is offering free VITA tax service to qualifying individuals through the IRS. To qualify gross income has to be less than $40,000 which cannot include self employment, rental income, farming income, adoption credits, partnership income, military income or foreign income. Volunteers Needed – The Stokes Volunteer Center is looking for:

Five (5) persons aged 18+ who are interested in helping with responding to disasters in Stokes County during daytime hours.

Two (2) volunteers who can do 30 minute presentations on disaster preparedness in our county.

Stokes Partnership for Children

Feb 19:
Outreach for School Readiness, a program of Stokes Partnership for Children is offering a “Positive Discipline and the Period of Purple Crying” 0 training. Jerri Wolfe with Parents as Teachers will be presenting from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at Stokes Partnership for Children. This training will focus on parenting as peacemakers and encouraging positive behaviors in young children and explain how the Period of Purple Crying occurs in infants. There is no charge for attending the training. A meal and childcare are available. Registration is required. Participants Needed! The seventh annual Little Folks Festival is scheduled for Saturday, April 19, 2008 at Walnut Cove Elementary School, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This fun filled countywide event focuses on the promotion of early care and education, school readiness, family support and health as it relates to young children and their families. If you have services or programs for young children and their families, booth registration if free and is due by Friday, April 11th. Ongoing: Looking for Kids to participate in the new Outreach for School Readiness program offered by Stokes Partnership for Children, featuring playgroups for children five and under who are not in regulated childcare. Parent/caregiver participation required during these fun, educational enrichment groups that encourage school readiness skills. Groups are currently being held at Francisco Presbyterian Church on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, at Sandy Ridge Community Center on the second and fourth Thursday of each month. The new King program will start March 3rd and will meet on the first and third Monday of each month at Stokes Partnership for Children. All groups meet from 9:30 am until 11:30 am. Photo Contest – Stokes Partnership for Children will sponsor an amateur photo contest “Little Folks of Stokes on the Move” (photos of children birth – age 5). Amateur photographers only. Three winners will be selected. All entries must be received by March 7, 2008 and there is a $5.00 entry fee per photograph submitted. Winners will be judged on relevance to theme and creativity.
